It's a manipulation based on a stock photography taken from an author I didn't remember so far because I recovered it from one of my old back-up disks and instantly liked it. Recently McConnors (thank you) found the original reference I'd like to add:

Elegant non-intrusive Gnome logo there. It makes a very nice wallpaper (I must admit I cropped it a bit for my 1280x800 laptop though).
