Okay I have waited for a bit before handing out my two bits to see if the splash screen would grow on me. No joy I still hate it. It still looks like the gnome foot is being blown away by a stiff wind. I think would like it better if it weren't so busy. It almost makes me want to puke. I would also be more inclined to overlook all of the busy elements, if it were made using open sourse software Blender and Gimp rather that Photoshop and Cinema4D. That just doesnt seem to go along with what gnome is all about or Gnu/Linux...

Oh my.. well i just feel like I should say something here..
I think Gnome 2.12 will work perfectly regardless of the splashscreen... just think about it for a bit..
No disregard for all the people who makes artistic works for the Gnome porject
I, myself will probably choose some other splashscreen as soon as a get my new Gnome 2.12. One that fits with the rest of my system...
Its a taste thing...

I registered explicitly to say I don't like it. It shouldn't be default. GNOME is simple, uncluttered, this does not convey that.

Same as the other people here, I don't like it. Aggressive colours, "aspirin" effect and un-worked font integration. It doesn't feel "professional" to me.

It could have been worse though :) I hope we won't see lens flares and Photoshop "cloud" filter next time !

I may seem harsh, but don't worry Xilef, your work was selected, I recognize it has qualities. Congratulations !

The splash is really cool. it looks elegant, dynamic and represents the many small parts the gnome-desktop consists of. It fits gnome and clearlooks quite well imho, can't understand why the "crowd" doesn't like it. good work!

i love the effect, good work !

I'd have to agree with the the rest of the crowd... I don't like it. Gnome has always been about cleanness and simplicity. This looks way too busy. I wouldn't say it reminds me of XP or KDE, but it doesn't embody Gnome or what Gnome is trying to do.

I'm sure the artist has alot of technical prowess with the programs involved, but it just doesn't scream "cool" to me.

Congrats!
Great graphic, but not a great splash.
Use of proprietary software is not only ironic, but counterproductive. Everytime I see this, it will make me want to go back to windows for Adobe products.

Maybe future submissions should be made in open source apps only, and go through a community vote?

Posted 15 September 2005 - 01:25

Sorry, but that is an awful image. It sends the wrong message about GNOME and is just so busy.

I agree with previous posts, the picture is really well done, but imho it does not reflect the spirit of gnome.
And as it was said, don't fit with clearlooks. This one is too XPish.

Posted 13 September 2005 - 08:34

Yeah.
This splash screen is a mistake...
Not mutch with the gnome human interface
Big difference between the gnome icon theme style and splash..
Big difference with clearlooks(witch is the default 2.12 theme) style and that..
And, becouse of that I'm using the default themes, I'll never use it as my splash screen.
#sorry for my bad english

It is most unfortunate that the winner of this version's splash screen can most easily be interpreted as a disintegrating version of the Gnome logo.

Does the selection committee there consider potential repercussions of this misinterpretation for the Gnome community, the reputation of the Gnome Foundation, etc. when a selection is made?

I am not here to criticize the artistic merit of the submission (it is clear that the artist is talented at using the tools in question), but I do wish more effort were put into the selection making process as seems to be the case:

The splash screen is the 1st thing a user sees when they log into Gnome and its selection should be based on more factors than just whether or not "it looks cool". With this design, the first thing a user sees is the mascot representing their desktop environment sublimating before their eyes! Ouch.

Also, that fact that the 2.10 splash screen contest was hosted at gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org/contest/) and the winner for 2.12 was - according to the artist himself, see the comment above - created using two non-FOSS tools (Photoshop and Cinema 4D) sure seems like a slap in the face to the GNOME Art community to me.

I am not a designer nor a CI/CD expert, but it seems the people making the selection are not adequately concerned with the image of the Gnome "brand" in general (or did not consider this when making the selection, at least). Because it does not take an expert to figure out that a disintegrating version of your logo is a potential risk for the brand you are "selling" here.

There. My 2 cents.

"To me it signifies that Gnome is __dissolving__ rather than evolving"

Some things dissolve to become a solution

Really nice work!

Is it possible to use mng-images as splash screens? I have all the needed images to make an animation.

From delire

To me it signifies that Gnome is __dissolving__ rather than evolving.
The moment I saw the image I thought of an Aspirin dissolving in a glass of water; particles floating upward as they dissipate.

Congrats

The idea is great but little bit hard to do with a static image so I think it could be better. If it was animated that would be great. Also the background looks bit dull, maybe more shadow casted from the foot would make it more cool.

Posted 7 September 2005 - 22:11

Errr.... An open source project with a backsplash made using proprietary software? Ironic.

From Xilef

I used Cinema4D and Photoshop.

Awesome work, gratz for winning :)
Can't wait to see this in Gnome 2.12

Posted 7 September 2005 - 11:34

hmm...personally, I don't like it.
May be becouse I associate this kind of blue with KDE/Mac Aqua.
But, I must say this is nice, interesting and original artwork.
And of course - congratulations.
