eXperience By dcberg

Preview eXperience is a gtk theme which copies and improves the look of XP Luna.

This is version 3.04 of the eXperience gtk-theme. It includes three color-schemes and has various improvements such as speedup, right-to-left support and out sourced stock icons.

The ComboBox needed to be readjusted because obviously there have been some changes to gtk that moved the arrow on the button to the wrong postion.

This theme requires the eXperience engine.

@jh: To debug the issue start programs from the console and see if there are any error messages. If GTK does not find the engine it will complain, etc.

@seguso:
1. Yes, the spacing is pretty big in the theme, but the real problem is that firefox does not correctly "emulate" what GTK does.

2. This is a limitation of GTK. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153966

3. Also a GTK limiation. There is a bug open, but I don't have the URL at hand right now.

i am using Suse 10.1 and I am too having a lot of problem.

Namely, Windows border, icons installed well, but panel view and other stay unchanged.

I have already checked those /usr and /usr local. It all contained the two library files.

I really do not know what is going on. Can anyone help?

This theme is great. Here are a few suggestions and wishes:

1. This is the only serious issue. There seems to be too much spacing between tabs, which makes firefox (and some other apps) look bad.

2. Differently from XP, deselected tabs don't get "prelighted" on
mouseover, and this is to me quite unpleasant. I didn't see any engine that does that, but I thought yours could be the first :)

3. Differently from XP, the menubar does not get highlighted on
mouseover. Once again it could be a general gtk limitation, but I
thought I'd ask you anyway. This problem is quite felt in the
community, since there are many wishes filed about that.

It is possible to theme the applets on the panel, but theming the background is unfortunatly not possible AFAIK.
That is why in eXperience you need to set the background of the panel manual to the panel_bg.png file found in the theme. (gtk-2.0/images/panel_bg.png)

Actually it seems to be possible now.

Are panel themeable as well?

From cbain

that would be /home/YOURHOME/.themes

I think I have found the problem

I downloaded the tar ball and looked inside. There are three directories, the main eXperience folder along with two more, ice and olive but in my .themes directory i only had the olive directory...

anyways, I removed the eXperience* dirs from .themes, downloaded the tar ball http://art.gnome.org/download/themes/gtk2/1058/GTK2-EXperience.tar.gz and manually extracted it to /home//.themes

If after you do this and it still doesnt work check that you have correctly installed the libexperience engine

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 Aug 8 20:55 /usr/local/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.so -> /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 Aug 8 20:56 /usr/local/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.la -> /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 Aug 8 20:53 /usr/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libexperience.so -> /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 Aug 8 20:53 /usr/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libexperience.la -> /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libexperience.la

I configured it like this:

./configure --prefix=/usr

HTH and good luck

I think it is fun having an Xp theme, at least just to show the friends, that Linux doesn't have a locked look.

Hmm, can you start some program from the console and see, if it fails loading the engine?
I assume that the engine _is_ the problem.

Hello,
I too am having difficulty installing the theme. I installed the theme engine in both /usr and then /usr/local, each time reinstalling the theme with no success. The map of metacity does not show libExperience.so in memory but other themes show thier respective engine.

I am using FC4 as well

Any help would be apprieciated
Thanks,
cbain

Probably the engine was installed in /usr/local instead of /usr and gtk doesn't find it. To correct this you should run configure with --prefix=/usr

hello! when trying to install the make process is stopped because a missing file: "parse.c", looking in "~./src" folder and this file really isn't there. I downloaded the tar package from the author's site and the same "problem" occurs: the missing file. Best regards fom Brazil.

Very great work! This is my all-times favourite theme. Keep on improving! :)

From dcberg

please excuse my screeming...

THIS THEME NEEDS THE EXPERIENCE ENGINE TO WORK!!!!

(I was just wondering why this theme is being downloaded more than 200 times a day, while the engine is downloaded only about 70 times)

I really like the clean look of this theme, and it definitely does look better than native XP, but I have a couple comments:

- It's really heavy on resources, CPU most noticeably. Way slower than XP's native theme. My CPU fan goes on all the time whenever I'm resizing a window, and GIMP is practically unusable.
- The tab widgets are drawn too small for the labels to properly fit inside them. The labels stick out above the actual tab image. It's not a big deal, but it's the only bug I've noticed with this otherwise great theme.

Unfortunately, since my system isn't so fast (only 1 GHz), I'm going to have to switch to a less intensive theme. I'll miss it!

I tried it, I changed back to my old theme right away, gnome doesn't need windows alike themes.

Bit xp-ish (the yellow-and blue) but worth trying!
